The Indie Index - Review - Sharkasaurus

shark1
Sweet baby Jesus, we’re gonna need a bigger buggy. Sharkasaurus is a book that delivers on it’s title and so much more. It’s creationists vs paleontologists vs a prehistoric shark out for blood on a golf course…yes a golf course! Creator, writer, and director Spencer Estabrooks brought Sharkasaurus to life in a 2014 short film. It’s tremor meets jaws premise traveled the festival circuit with bloody success. Estabrooks was not fulfilled by this great short film. His imagination was beyond the budget of a short film and he wanted to tell a bigger story, with a bigger and more diverse cast, and of course with a bigger Sharkasaurus. In June 2016 Estabrooks launched a Kickstarter to fund a Sharkasaurus graphic novel with Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust). It didn’t take long for the book to be funded and they moved full steam ahead with the project. Unfortunately, due to Jenkins' success on the Matt Kindt series Grass Kings, he...

The Indie Index - Review - Come Into Me #1

ComeIntoMeCover2 600x923
Come Into Me is a strange story. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Black Mask Studio. Based on just the premise, it would be enough for me to grab it off the shelf of my local comic store.   From the very first page, I was left wondering what I had gotten myself into by agreeing to give Come Into Me a read. I can hear the rubber gloves snapping, even now. Co-writer Lonnie Nadler described Come Into Me as “imagine if David Cronenberg directed an episode of Black Mirror. It might look something like Come Into Me.” It’s true, that description is 100 percent accurate. The story is horrific, twisted. Come Into Me breaks the chains shackled to the modern conventions of comic books and flips them on their head. Whatever you think about comics will be challenged with this debut issue alone.   By now, everyone should know that...

I like the front cover how the Reflection is reversed, nice bit of symbolism there.

The Indie Index - Review - Tart #6

tart2
Sweet with just enough sass. I must confess, I was a newbie to the epic adventures of Tart Acid, before yesterday that is. Written by Kevin Joseph, the quick paced action in Tart starts on panel one and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.  The first five issues are an excellent combination of the telvision show Quantum Leap meeting Kill Bill and tossing in a little Dr. Who .  Tart, the recently deceased demon hunter, has the unfortunate time traveling side effect of temporary memory loss. This leaves Tart in the same place as the reader, never knowing what could be coming around the next corner.  Catching up with the first five issues as I did, couldn't be easier with the current Kickstarter campaign already fully backed for issue 6.  One reward has all past issues available for $8.00 in digital PDF format or physical copies for only...

The Indie Index - Review - The Pale #1-2

Dawn and Logan Coffee
The Pale opens with coffee, okay I'm listening. The coffee machine is broken and now I feel for these characters. Now that I've mentioned coffee and have gotten you invested, let's talk about The Pale. Police procedural type comics are great, especially when they're based in a small rural town where everyone knows everyone. It's a guilty pleasure of mine. Only if the dialogue and pacing is right, though. The Pale ticks all of the boxes. Perfect timing, great dialogue and realistic characters. Fabares’ art isn't what I'd expect to show up in a comic of the crime genre. I was expecting gritty, loose art which seems to be the trend. However, the lines are crisp and they serve their purpose. The art is almost playful, at times, but you know what? It works. There's a simplicity behind the art that's completely endearing. The art fits perfectly to The Pale. Without...
