Norm Breyfogle: 1960 - 2018

9EF4551B 529F 48C8 BF1E 9502625AFE97
It was Monday 24 September when news started to trickle through comics fandom, that one of its brightest and best had passed this mortal plane. Norm Breyfogle had died at the tragically young age of 58.     If you grew up reading comics in the 1980’s, then Norm Breyfogle  was Batman. His art style perfectly captured the mystery and suspense of the Dark Knight, whilst giving life to his flowing cape and to Gotham City itself.  His now legendary run on the character spanned 6 years across Detective Comics , Batman and Batman: Shadow Of The Bat as well as numerous one shots. Breyfogle, along with long time Batman collaborator Alan Grant, oversaw many key landmarks in the history of the Batman mythos. New characters like the Ventriloquist , the  Ratcatcher , Jeremiah Arkham and Mr Zsasz  were introduced which added to the Caped Crusaders rich history. None more so, than the introduction of Timothy...

Steve Ditko 1927 - 2018

DITKO1
Legendary comic book creator and artist passes at the age of 90. Steve Ditko, famed artist and comic book creator, has died at the age of 90. A celebrated artist and a pillar of the groundbreaking Marvel Age of Comics of the early 1960's, Ditko was credited with numerous creations and co-creations, most famously Spider-Man . His unique style is credited with pushing the boundaries of comic book art and was perfectly in tune with the psychedelic 60's.  The comic book industry was quick to pay tribute to Ditko. "Steve Ditko was true to his own ideals. He saw things his own way, and he gave us ways of seeing that were unique. Often copied. Never equalled. I know I'm a different person because he was in the world." Neil Gaiman "Spider-Man. Dr. Strange. The Question. The Creeper. Shade the Changing Man. Hawk & Dove. He worked with @Marvel AND...

The Indie Index - Review - Sharkasaurus

shark1
Sweet baby Jesus, we’re gonna need a bigger buggy. Sharkasaurus is a book that delivers on it’s title and so much more. It’s creationists vs paleontologists vs a prehistoric shark out for blood on a golf course…yes a golf course! Creator, writer, and director Spencer Estabrooks brought Sharkasaurus to life in a 2014 short film. It’s tremor meets jaws premise traveled the festival circuit with bloody success. Estabrooks was not fulfilled by this great short film. His imagination was beyond the budget of a short film and he wanted to tell a bigger story, with a bigger and more diverse cast, and of course with a bigger Sharkasaurus. In June 2016 Estabrooks launched a Kickstarter to fund a Sharkasaurus graphic novel with Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust). It didn’t take long for the book to be funded and they moved full steam ahead with the project. Unfortunately, due to Jenkins' success on the Matt Kindt series Grass Kings, he...

The Indie Index - Interview with Jason Pittman

Mental illness - or Mental Illness, depending on how you envision it - is a topic that has worked its way into the comic book medium, for better or for worse. The topic travels different paths in the various taless that it is featured in, you'll never find yourself reading a story that defines mental illness in the same way as others. The War For Kaleb is a story that takes the topic and merges it with the superhero genre.  The War For Kaleb by Jason Pittman is currently on Kickstarter so read this interview and check the campaign out.   Introduce yourself:    I'm Jason Pittman.  I am a self published writer/artist for the series Leftovers, and most currently The War for Kaleb, which is a superhero story about an anxiety disorder that I have just launched a Kickstarter for.  I went to the School of Visual Arts in NYC,...

Fallen Idols "Where's Waldo the Assassin?"

rect24976 6 2 6 1 7
The last post got delayed about a week so I thought hold off rather than post within 2 days of eachother. This weeks content: -Work in progress, "playing a game with the audience" -Podcast! want us to talk about your book? -how to write a comic part 4 "how does do panels?" WORK IN PROGRESS "Playing a game with the audience": So I've finished the building which mentioned last post and here it is: I'd have liked to have spent more time in it's design but eventually you just gotta move on... maybe if i need something new I'll give it a renovation.  For me double panels always take a long time to make, some things I meant to add in like other pedestrians, rubbish and debris like barrels and crates just to make the place more lived in... I will probbably put that in during the editing process, let...

The Greatest Comic Book Covers #2 - Detective Comics #27

DetectiveComics27Panel
The Dark Knight Detective has cast a vigilant shadow over the comic book world for over 70 years now! Geek Genie continues its ongoing series with #2 and a look at the first appearance of The Batman in Detective Comics #27!   With those immortal words, The Batman was born. And he's been striking fear into the hearts of criminals ever since. Fresh off the success of Action Comics #1, National Allied Publications (later known as DC Comics) delivered yet another iconic character. Bill Finger, assisted by Bob Kane, introduced the story of millionaire Bruce Wayne and his obsessive quest for justice in the guise of his Bat-alter ego.                        As Action Comics #1 had done previously, The Batman leapt off the pages of Detective Comics #27. But this time, instead of a brightly coloured Superman performing miraculous feats of...

Fallen Idols "Grand Designs of a protagonist building"

rect24976 6 2 6 1 7 8
I almost didn't make a post last week as I thought I might be cluttering up the website with blog posts. Obviously I changed my mind, but I'm thinking of making these posts fortnightly, let me know what you think. This weeks content: -work in progress, "Grand Designs of a protagonist building" -"how to write a comic part 3: story planning WORK IN PROGRESS "Grand Designs of a protagonist building": So onto page 4, had some distractions in the form of commissioned work to help a guy with his job application. but in the spare time I had managed to create this image: (still a work in progress, but definitely getting there)   This is a manner house which is going to feature a lot in the comic book, I had to decide very carefully how this was going to look as I'd be drawing this room a lot. it would...

The Indie Index - Review - Come Into Me #1

ComeIntoMeCover2 600x923
Come Into Me is a strange story. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Black Mask Studio. Based on just the premise, it would be enough for me to grab it off the shelf of my local comic store.   From the very first page, I was left wondering what I had gotten myself into by agreeing to give Come Into Me a read. I can hear the rubber gloves snapping, even now. Co-writer Lonnie Nadler described Come Into Me as “imagine if David Cronenberg directed an episode of Black Mirror. It might look something like Come Into Me.” It’s true, that description is 100 percent accurate. The story is horrific, twisted. Come Into Me breaks the chains shackled to the modern conventions of comic books and flips them on their head. Whatever you think about comics will be challenged with this debut issue alone.   By now, everyone should know that...

The Indie Index - News - Freak Weather Conditions Forces Dunfermline Comic Con Cancellation

art1
Extreme weather conditions and concern for public safety has forced the cancellation of Dunfermline Comic Con, in Scotland. The park, which was serving as venue to the event, was deemed unsafe and that even a dramatic change in weather would not allow enough time to make things safe.   Little Shop of Heroes, organisers of Dunfermline Comic Con, have posted an announcement via social media platforms: The statement says: "It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to inform you that  Dunfermline Comic Con  this weekend has been cancelled. At 11:30 this morning the parks department assessed Pittencrieff Park and deemed it as unsafe for the public. Furthermore with the priorities for roads and paths elsewhere even a dramatic change in the weather will not allow for them to make it safe in time. Dunfermline Comic-Con is a family event, and this occasion and the Books For Schools...

FALLEN IDOLS "CONCEPTION"

frame 1
So I'm making another blog post, almost less than a day after the first one I posted but I thought I'd strike while the iron is hot since I'm new here. Thought I'd talk about a few things here today: my work in progress and STEP 1 of making a comic book "conception".   WORK IN PROGRESS: So as you may know, I'm working on a Comic book, specifically the second issue to the one I just published on etsy.com. Currently I'm working on page 3.  keep in mind the first panel is no where near what I'd call complete, but this gives the opportunity to talk about how I do things. Since I'm using Inkscape which is a free version of Illustrator , when I'll draw something, anything really, I'll then save it into a archive library. This library contains ever pose of all characters, backgrounds, animals, plants, furniture,...

The Indie Index - Interview with Theodore Riddle

cover2002
I'm just putting it out there that this is the most in-depth interview that I've ever been a part of. Theodore Riddle is a person who clearly knows what he wants and goes for it, tooth and nail. Here's the interview, please enjoy!   Hey Theodore! First things first those those who may not know you, tell us a little about yourself. A misconception about Monolith Comics is that I am a Publisher which I am, but I am mainly a self published artist. Monolith Comics is just the imprint under which I have established my business for tax reasons to self publish my creation entitled Compu-M.E.C.H., Mechanically Engineered and Computerized Hero® and the universe which surrounds the story. I have done all the writing, penciling, inking and lettering of all of my twenty-seven 128 page black and white graphic novels. This has been the effort of twenty years worth...
