The Greatest Comic Book Covers #4

Silver Surfer Vol 1 4
Welcome back to the next installment of our regular series, The Greatest Comic Book Covers. We have a fitting issue for the fourth part in this series. To the stars!   Cover dated February 1969, The Silver Surfer #4 screamed "iconic cover alert!" as soon as it hit the shelves. Featuring the art of the legendary John Buscema Silver Surfer #4 pits the Rider of the Spaceways against the Asgardian God of Thunder himself!  The black and purple background make the two headline characters stand out but it's the kinetic energy that Buscema really captures with the Surfer flying headlong into the God of Thunder, with the Asgardian winding up the mighty Mjolnir to do battle. With Thor standing on the Bifrost and Asgard in the background this cover has stood the test of time and has inspired many homage covers, most recently a beautiful rendition by the great Joe...

DC Entertainment Pays Tribute To Stan Lee

As pop-culture fans across the world digested the news of Stan Lee's passing, DC Comics paid there own tribute to "The Man".   Given  all  his achievements in comic books, entertainment and pop culture, Stan Lee’s nickname, “The Man,” was both well earned and well deserved. From his time as a teenage assistant at then Timely Comics, through his collaborations with fellow icons like Jack Kirby ,  Steve  Ditko , John Romita Sr. and John  Buscema , plus his  tireless promotion of comic books to a mainstream audience , Lee was  in no small part  responsible for raising the profile of comic books  to make  them accessible to everyone.   “Without  Stan Lee’s  fertile and creative mind , endless energy and work ethic, comic books would have been completely different from what  we know  and enjoy  today,” said DC Publisher Dan DiDio.  “He helped to create worlds that were both...

Stan Lee 1922 - 2018

0010fbb2 500
As news of Stan Lee's passing reverberates around the world, Geek Genie pays tribute to "The Man". Although most of us knew this day was coming, it was still hard to take. At 95 years of age, Stanley Martin Lieber, had passed. He had lived his best life. In recent months, the signs were there that Stan may not be of this mortal plane for much longer. After his beloved wife Joan passed away in 2017 also at the age of 95, his health slowly deteriorated. Stan Lee's place in comic book and indeed pop-culture history is already assured. He was instrumental in turning a fledgling Marvel Comics into a powerhouse which shunted to one side the old established order represented by DC Comics. Lee's penchant for hyperbole saw him add the strapline "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" to the Fantastic Four comic...after only two issues! But it was precisely...

The Greatest Comic Book Covers #3

Amazing Spider Man Vol 1 300 2
In the third installment of our ongoing series, our spotlight falls on Marvel's flagship character Spider-Man and how a certain Canadian artist reinvented everyones favourite arachnid for a whole new generation. In 1987 an up and coming Canadian artist took over the artistic reigns on Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man title. Neither the character, nor the wider comic book industry, would ever be the same again.  Todd McFarlane was an overnight sensation on Amazing Spider-Man . Ever since co-creator Steve Ditko left the book way back in the 1966 dated issue Amazing Spider-Man #39, the web spinner was fixed in a Marvel "house style" best depicted by John Romita Senior and Ross Andru. An acclaimed run by Ron Frenz took the wall crawler back to his Ditko days until McFarlane joined the book as its regular artist with issue #298. McFarlane really put the spider into Spider-Man. Bigger bug eyes and...

Norm Breyfogle: 1960 - 2018

9EF4551B 529F 48C8 BF1E 9502625AFE97
It was Monday 24 September when news started to trickle through comics fandom, that one of its brightest and best had passed this mortal plane. Norm Breyfogle had died at the tragically young age of 58.     If you grew up reading comics in the 1980’s, then Norm Breyfogle  was Batman. His art style perfectly captured the mystery and suspense of the Dark Knight, whilst giving life to his flowing cape and to Gotham City itself.  His now legendary run on the character spanned 6 years across Detective Comics , Batman and Batman: Shadow Of The Bat as well as numerous one shots. Breyfogle, along with long time Batman collaborator Alan Grant, oversaw many key landmarks in the history of the Batman mythos. New characters like the Ventriloquist , the  Ratcatcher , Jeremiah Arkham and Mr Zsasz  were introduced which added to the Caped Crusaders rich history. None more so, than the introduction of Timothy...

Venom hits theatres this week and rumours are abound that a certain web slinger may eventually cross paths with the anti-hero symbiote. Sony may have loaned out it's hottest property to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Spider-Man appeared in Civil War and then Homecoming , but it still has a significant number of Spider-Man related characters in its film stable. One of those is Venom, a symbiote infected Eddie Brock who has wreaked havoc in the Spiderverse ever since his introduction in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man #300 way back in 1988. Venom the movie will hit cinema screens this week and already the fan gossip is about Spider-Man and whether or not our friendly neighbourhood web-head will make an appearance or even be referenced. His unique style is credited with pushing the boundaries of comic book art and was perfectly in tune with the psychedelic 60's.  The comic book industry was quick to pay tribute to Ditko. Catching Up with Voice Actor Kyle Hebert

This past March, I headed over to Jacksonville Collective Con to cover the event for my YouTube Channel. At the Con, I was able to conduct some really neat interviews with some of the guests they had. However, there was one guest that really stood out going into this event - that was none other than famous Voice Actor Kyle Hebert. Being such a fan of his work on Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, let’s just say I was really hoping to speak with him. To my luck, I had the opportunity to speak with Kyle about his extensive career in Professional Voice Acting. Here is an overview of some of the topics we were able to discuss in this interview. Do all the voices come naturally to you? Kyle’s resume and the amount of character voices he’s done over the years is through the roof. With each different character’s...

The Indie Index - Review - Sharkasaurus

shark1
Sweet baby Jesus, we’re gonna need a bigger buggy. Sharkasaurus is a book that delivers on it’s title and so much more. It’s creationists vs paleontologists vs a prehistoric shark out for blood on a golf course…yes a golf course! Creator, writer, and director Spencer Estabrooks brought Sharkasaurus to life in a 2014 short film. It’s tremor meets jaws premise traveled the festival circuit with bloody success. Estabrooks was not fulfilled by this great short film. His imagination was beyond the budget of a short film and he wanted to tell a bigger story, with a bigger and more diverse cast, and of course with a bigger Sharkasaurus. In June 2016 Estabrooks launched a Kickstarter to fund a Sharkasaurus graphic novel with Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust). It didn’t take long for the book to be funded and they moved full steam ahead with the project. Unfortunately, due to Jenkins' success on the Matt Kindt series Grass Kings, he...

The Indie Index - Interview with Jason Pittman

Mental illness - or Mental Illness, depending on how you envision it - is a topic that has worked its way into the comic book medium, for better or for worse. Fallen Idols "Where's Waldo the Assassin?"

rect24976 6 2 6 1 7
The last post got delayed about a week so I thought hold off rather than post within 2 days of eachother. This weeks content: -Work in progress, "playing a game with the audience" -Podcast! want us to talk about your book? -how to write a comic part 4 "how does do panels?" WORK IN PROGRESS "Playing a game with the audience": So I've finished the building which mentioned last post and here it is: I'd have liked to have spent more time in it's design but eventually you just gotta move on... maybe if i need something new I'll give it a renovation.  For me double panels always take a long time to make, some things I meant to add in like other pedestrians, rubbish and debris like barrels and crates just to make the place more lived in... I will probbably put that in during the editing process, let...
