Does The “Get Out” Movie Deserve The Oscar?

The movie “Get Out” is extremely creepy, and scary movies don’t usually succeed in scaring me. It was also not what I expected at all. At the beginning of the movie, the premise seems to be a white girl (Rose) taking her black boyfriend to meet her parents. Her boyfriend, Chris, is extremely worried about Rose’s parents accepting him since he is African American. As the movie goes on, Rose’s parents’ thoughts about Chris aren’t one of his main concerns. They seem to like him right away.

Chris notices that all of the servants at Rose’s household are black. This seems to be pretty racist and weird in today’s day and age. Chris overlooks it at first, but then it gets worse and worse. The black servants seem to be very happy with waiting on the white family. They even talk about how they love doing everything for the household.

Rose’s mother is a psychiatrist and her father is a neurosurgeon so it’s obvious they know a lot about the brain. Rose’s mother hypnotizes Chris not long after he gets to the house. He didn’t ask for this hypnotism. She ends up making Chris cry and he was not happy with her mother doing this to him.

The truth about this family’s practices unravels slowly but surely. Chris thought his trip was just going to be a meet the parents scenario, but it turned out so much crazier than that. The last scary movie that I enjoyed before this was at least 10 years ago. This movie was REALLY creepy and had a wonderful sequence of events. It definitely is an Oscar-worthy movie.

Maze Runner The Death Cure Review

The Death Cure is the epic finale to the Maze Runner trilogy we have all been waiting for. Thomas and his allies are back to stop WCKD from taking Minho and sacrificing him for a cure. Meeting old friends and new enemies along the way, Thomas has to fight his way through WCKD’s army to save his friends and the world.

Synopsis:

After Minho was captured by WCKD, Thomas must live up to his promise and find Minho. He must go through the worst of the scorched earth and even reunite with the deadly maze of the first movie. Coming across several new allies and enemies, Thomas will do whatever it takes to stop WCKD and fight for survival.

Positives:

  • A great finale and a wicked twist!
  • A consistent trilogy of movies that could live up to great titles such as ‘The Lord of the Rings’‘The Dark Knight’ and even the original ‘Star Wars’
  • Action packed with great cinematography, visual effects and characterisation.
Negatives:
The gap was too long between ‘The Scorch Trials’ and “The Death Cure” meaning audiences may have forgotten key details.
Minho’s role was a tad overplayed.
At times there was too much going on leaving the audience confused.
My Review & Rating
A really enjoyable end to a solid trilogy of movies. They had everything! Bone chilling scares, zombies, action-packed drama and tension, The Death Cure is a roller coaster adventure that hits all the right notes.

8/10 – “A fantastic movie, making the trilogy set one of the best out there.”

Top 3 Iconic Villains From The Big Screen

“A hero is only as great as its villain”. Whether you feared them or loved them, or both, these iconic film villains will remain a big part of movie history. Here, I will rank my top 3 villains in film history.

As the Clown Prince of Crime would say…”And here we…GO!”

3. The Terminator (The Terminator series)

Portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger

An 80’s classic villain! With an iconic soundtrack, The Terminator lay the ground work for future CGI developments. Disguised as a human, The Terminator is a cyborg assassin sent from the year 2029 to kill Sarah Connor. Arnold Schwarzenegger portrays his character perfectly as one of the most feared villains in film history. He is a brutal killing machine that cannot be stopped. If you don’t believe me watch the movie yourself! The Terminator is definitely up there as one of film’s greatest villains and later becoming one of film’s greatest heroes.

2. The Joker (The Dark Knight)

Portrayed by Heath Ledger

‘The Dark Knight’ is widely considered the greatest comic inspired movie of all time. A big reason for that would be the fantastic performance by Heath Ledger as the spine-chilling Joker. Heath Ledger does not just play the role, he becomes the Joker! The Joker is brutal and insane as ever and really does get the best out of Batman. Definitely one of films greatest villains of all time.

1 . Darth Vader/ Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars Original Trilogy)

You can be cool, but you can never be so cool that every time you walk in a room the ‘Imperial March’ plays in the background. Darth Vader is without doubt the greatest villain ever! He had it all! Intimidating, frightening and just down right awesome. Darth Vader can do it all, fight Jedi masters with his blood red lightsaber and match Luke Skywalker in piloting. Although he is the apprentice of Emperor Palpatine, what makes him a great villain is his link to the heroes Luke and Leia. The “I am your Father” shock gave Darth Vader a mysterious background that everyone wanted to be explained. It gave us depth to the character, as he wasn’t just cool on the surface but has an awesome background. Darth Vader is easily number 1 on this list and will be eternally remembered by the film universe.

Ranking All 18 MCU Movies. Which is best?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been Hollywood’s most successful movie studio since the release of The Avengers and has revolutionised modern filmmaking. After the recent release of Marvel’s Black Panther and with the anticipated release of Avengers Infinity War, I have decided to make a king sized special on the MCU movies, ranking all the movies from 18 right through to number 1!

18. “The Incredible Hulk” (2008)

The main reason The Incredible Hulk is in the dreaded 18th position on my list is because we can all agree that it was forgettable. It may have a been a decent movie at the time but after the casting change no-one remembers Edward Norton as The Hulk. Will we, however see a Mark Ruffalo Hulk movie? That most definitely won’t be forgettable!

17. “Iron Man 2” (2010)

Iron Man 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed “Iron Man” that kicked off the entire MCU. The sequel was disappointing compared to the first installment however was action packed. It also gave us the epic introduction to the ultimate bad-ass super heroine, the Black Widow. Marvel have plans for a solo Black Widow movie which she throroughly deserves!

16. “Thor: The Dark World” (2013)

Thor the Dark World wasn’t as bad as people said it was in my books, but still it wasn’t as good as the first Thor movie. Its best moments were the post-credit scenes confirming the existence of the 6 infinity stones, Frigga’s death, Loki slicing Thor’s hand off (but not really) and the epic ending of Loki sitting on the throne of Asgard.

15. “Ant-Man” (2015)

Ant-Man isn’t meant to be an “Avengers” scale movie where the entire planet is in peril. Instead Marvel introduces the everyman hero. A down on his luck good guy trying to do the right thing, even though he messes up most of the time! It was and still is definitely one of Marvel’s most humorous movies.

14. “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011)

Captain America The First Avenger take us back in time to WWII. The origin of Cap is actually the origin of the Avengers, hence the title. It is the only MCU movie set in the past and is a faithful retelling of Cap’s origin. A very good start to a movie series that gets better and better! i

13. “Iron Man 3” (2013)

Iron Man 3 delivers the typical “Tony Stark” humour with typical Iron Man style action. It is much better than the second installment but still doesn’t reach the heights of 2008’s Iron Man. It has one of the MCU’s most shocking plot twists!

12. “Thor” (2011)

The first Thor movie is one of the most underrated MCU offerings. It gives us great character backgrounds, a new tale for the MCU and beautiful scenes in Asgard. Thor ranks as one of the MCU’s best origin stories without a shadow of doubt.

11. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015)

Avengers Age of Ultron was probably the MCU’s most anticipated movies (sorry Thanos!). Although it didn’t really live up to expectations, it was still a fantastic sequel with a new threat created by the Avengers themselves.

10. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” (2017)

After the unexpected success of the first Guardians film, the second one was written in the stars…literally. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 was a great addition to the MCU. Its key theme was the idea of family, whether it was Gamora and Nebula, Peter and Ego and even Yondu and Rocket, we truly feel for each and every one of the Guardians in this film.

9. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017)

Probably the most unique Marvel film, Spider-Man Homecoming is for the 1960’s comic series fan who grew up reading about Peter Parker’s school life as well as his superhero life. It is also a more personal movie than some of the larger scale MCU movies. It focuses on Peter’s relationship with his mentor Tony Stark and his desire to gain his trust and acceptance. Spidey’s nemesis in this move is The Vulture who is played perfectly by Michael Keaton. Keaton delivers a performance oozing with menace and is a truly intimitading figure for the teenage Spider-Man. However as menacing as he is, his motivations does lend the character some sympathy and the audience is swayed by his powerful arguement in defence of the “little guy”. The best interpretation of Spider-Man since the Tobey Maguire run.

8. “Iron Man” (2008)

The one that started it all! Iron Man was always going to rank high on this list. Iron Man delivered a new kind of superhero flick with not a cape to be seen…not even an alter ego! Marvel stayed true to its comic roots and superhero tale rooted in the real world. The casting of RDJ as Iron Man was arguably the best decision Marvel have made.

7. “Doctor Strange” (2016)

Visually stunning. This movie had the best special effects I have ever seen and gave us yet another unique tale and introduced us to the mystical parts of the MCU. Doctor Strange is one of the best Marvel movies out there and has proved to be a significant character in the run up to Infinity War.

6. “Thor Ragnarok” (2017)

Taika Waititi completely changed the character of Thor, and it was for the better. This action-comedy is tonnes of fun to watch and gives us great scenes, characters and settings. It also gives us a truly threatening villain in Hela who kills the warriors three just like that. Thor has never been more awesome!

5. “Captain America: Civil War” (2016)

“A movie where The Avengers fight each other, this is the end of the MCU!” screamed every fan after hearing the title. However Civil War delivered storytelling in the most compelling and meaningful way. It was action packed and introduced two beloved new characters. After this, the MCU and the world they know will never be the same.

4. “Black Panther” (2018)

The latest installment of the MCU, Black Panther has had critics applauding its success. Whether it’s the cultural and political aspect, the non-stop action and effects, the beautiful location, the awesome soundtrack or the all-star cast, Black Panther ranks as one of the best ever MCU offerings. For me, Erik Killmonger ranks as one of the MCU’s greatest ever villains with Michael B Jordan stealing the show.

3. “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014)

Who ever heard of the Guardians of The Galaxy? How could they be a success?! Marvel took another huge gamble by taking this little known band of inter-stellar adventurers and putting them onto the big screen. GOTG turned out to be a riotous cosmic adventure with hilarious characters, a great soundtrack and lots more information on the infinity stones. We also got to see more of the big, bad Thanos and how the infinity stones are shaping the future of the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy deserves to be right next to the big guns.

2. “The Avengers” (2012)

This was the big one! The first team-up movie that the MCU was building up to ever since the relase of Iron Man. This is the film that truly made Marvel into the phenomenon it is today. An amazing plot, with a great villain and some of Marvel’s best  loved characters. Avengers Assemble!

1 . “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014)

Whether you agree or not, Captain America the Winter Soldier was the best MCU movie in my opinion. It had the best action scenes I had ever seen in a movie.  The characters were brilliant, my favourite being the Winter Soldier, and finally the plot had a huge impact on the MCU. In fact, it turned the MCU upside-down. The second Captain America movie beats all others to become the diamond of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

If any of you enjoyed reading my article, please comment below! Iwelcome any suggestions for future ideas. If DC fans want me to rank all the DCEU movies I would be happy to do so. I write Movies, TV, Comics, Gaming and many more categories! Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my articles.

Ranking all 9 Star Wars movies!

After the new Solo trailer being released, I thought it be right to rank every Star Wars movie from worst to best as I did with MCU movies, join us on this trip and be warned of controversy!

9. Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)

Attack of the clones was just as terrible as the first prequel episode, a pointless and dull plot that left us waiting for the movie to end, not a typical Star Wars movie trait. Although the high of this movie was to see Master Yoda in action for the first time ever, and epic scene in a disappointing film.

8. Episode I – The Phantom menace

The phantom menace actually left me more bored than its sequel, especially scenes that included the worst Star Wars character to date Jar Jar Binks, however what puts this just ahead was the final lightsaber sequence between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and the demonic Darth Maul. One word…Epic!

7. Rogue One – A Star Wars Story (2016)

Rogue one is without doubt an action-packed epic that ended 2016 with a blast! However, it also had a meaningless plot which had a small impact on the Star Wars universe and the directly tied movie A New Hope which follows in the Star Wars timeline. Although we do get to see Darth Vader shred rebels with his menacing red lightsaber glow!

6. Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

The Force Awakens promised a worthwhile sequel to the original trilogy, returning with old characters and introducing the new! The Force Awakens was a huge success reaching the 3rd highest grossing film ever reaching above $2 billion, however after fans and critics alike applauding the J.J. Abrams production, some argued it was a copy of A New Hope. Do you agree? Comment below!

5. Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)

The one that started it all, one of films most successful movie series. Originally titled “Star Wars” A New Hope introduced iconic characters such as Luke, Leia, Han and Vader himself. Gave us an unparalleled plot including the infamous Death Star and of course the universally known Star Wars soundtrack. Brilliant from George Lucas!

4. Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

The epic finale to one of the greatest film trilogies, Luke Skywalker is a Jedi Knight and embarks on a journey to redeem his Father’s sins and end the Empire for good. The Return of Jedi is the most action packed out of all the original movies with gun fights, excellent piloting and of course an epic lightsaber duel between father and son. A true classic!

3. Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)

The best of the worst! Revenge of the Sith sadly sits amongst some of the worst films in Star Wars, this isn’t the case with Episode III. Revenge of the Sith tells the tale of Anakin turning into Vader, it is a great story and of course has the best lightsaber sequences I have ever seen in any Star Wars movie. If I could use one word to describe this film, it would be underrated! If you agree make sure to comment below.

2. Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)

I know, I know this is a bold move with some fans screaming in joy or even disgust. The Last Jedi is the most controversial Star Wars movie ever made. Personally, I think Rian Johnson did a spectacular job portraying the characters of Kylo Ren, Rey and of course Luke Skywalker. The action scenes are epic and every scene left me shocked. The Last Jedi is truly a classic for any Star Wars fan. Agree or Disagree? Comment below!

1 . Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

One of the greatest films ever made. The Empire Strikes Back lives up to and surpasses A New Hope with Luke and Vader having their first lightsaber duel. Vader having captured the rebels and Han Solo being frozen in Carbon! The film also introduces longtime favourite master Yoda who trains young Luke and of course the evil Emperor Palpatine. The true success of the film is the unbelievable twist that no one saw coming, “I am your Father!”. This was ultimately Vader’s movie as the villains won. The Star Wars universe would never be the same!

Raimi’s Spider-Man – A Look Back After “Homecoming”

With the introduction of Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the recent box office hit Homecoming, Geek Genie takes a wistful look back at Sam Raimi’s original trilogy of movies in the naughties…starting with Spider-Man.

When a young teenager by the name of Tom Holland appeared in Captain America: Civil War, it was the first time a teenager was depicting a teenage Spider-Man. Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield and long before him Nicolas Hammond, were all mid to late twenties when they were web spinning so most of fandom were happy that Spider-Man was truly returning to his roots with a physical depiction of Spider-Man more true to the original character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

So how does the Maguire Spider-Man now fit into the cinematic mythos? In terms of continuity, it doesn’t exist as Marvel only recently reached an agreement with Sony to take creative control of Spider-Man and enter him into the MCU.

Spider-Man was a hugely successful film at the box office, raking in over $800m worldwide. That would be a smash hit today, more so in 2002. It was also met with critical success as well and much of that is down to Sam Raimi’s faithful comic book adaptation of Spider-Man and his supporting cast. Toby Maguire’s boyish looks made him a passable teenage high school student and he was ably supported by a quality cast from Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn, James Franco as Harry Osborn and J.K Simmons delivering for fans a J.J.Jameson taken straight from the pages of the comic books.

The plot revolved mainly around the relationship between Peter, Harry and Norman. With Peter and Harry being like brothers, Norman Osborn looks upon Peter as a son he should have had. Both were scientific geniuses and with Peter having lost his parents, Norman was a father figure. But as science brought the two together, science would eventually tear them apart. Peter was bitten by a genetically created spider at a science exhibition and Norman took matters into his own hands when using himself to test the formula that would transform him into Spider-Man’s greatest ever foe, the Green Goblin.

Peter’s personal life has always been a source of great stortelling and character development in the comic books and Raimi and Maguire combined to portray a Peter Parker familiar to comic book fans and endearing to film goers. The origin story was recreated faithfully and the impact of Uncle Ben’s death is the central driving force behind Peter’s desire to become Spider-Man. The slight tweak in the origin story was the argument that Peter has with Uncle Ben. As this was the last interaction between the two, the guilt and horror that Peter feels when Uncle Ben is shot is magnified and provided movie goers with a more overt expression of what drives Peter to become the man, and Spider-Man, that he eventually becomes.

The endearing thing about Raimi’s Spider-Man is that audiences really got to connect with Peter. We witnessed his bullying in high school, his unrequited love for MJ, the life long guilt that he will feel about his Uncle Ben’s death, made worse when his Aunt May finally finds out about Peter’s last moments with Ben in Spider-Man 2 as well as his quest to create his own suit. This truly was a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. It’s omething that Spider-Man – Homecoming maybe missed out on a little. Yes, of course most audience by now are very well versed in the origin of Spider-Man so there is an understandable argument to skip what we already know. But by doing that audiences have been robbed of the first, deep cut that forms the emotional bond with Peter by never seeing him suffer with the loss of Uncle Ben as well as his motivation for being Spider-Man. In Homecoming, whilst a great and thoroughly enjoyable movie, Spider-Man has almost become a Tony Stark creation right down to the AI boosted costume. Peter even says desperately to Tony Stark “I’m nothing without the suit”. Of course, Peter would eventually find that he doesn’t need the suit to be a hero but did he really need Tony Stark to teach him that lesson as well?

From the casting, to the special effects wich were ground breaking at the time and indeed was nominated for Academy Awards, Raimi’s Spider-Man brought fans their favourite wall crawler to the big screen after decades of false dawns. And it didn’t disappoint.

Marvel fans were on the whole positive about Homecoming and to Tom Holland becoming the face of Spider-Man for the next 10 years. But I have a feeling that Toby Maguire will fast become the Christopher Reeves of Spider-Man movies.
