AVENGERS Vet Joins AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. In Recurring Role

Powers Boothe has joined the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a recurring role as Gideon Malick, described as “a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery.”

Marvel mentions Boothe – not Gideon – previously appeared in Marvel’s The Avengers as an unnamed member of the World Security Council. Boothe did not appear as part of the World Security Council in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While the announcement is not clear, it would be somewhat odd for Boothe to play two different characters in franchises so closely tied to one another, and Boothe’s somewhat ominous turn in Avengers would seem to align with the character Marvel now describes.

Though Marvel’s press release is unclear, Entertainment Weekly reports that Gideon Malick is indeed the same character Boothe portrayed in Avengers.

“Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear,” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.”

Boothe is no stranger to comic book TV or movies, having appeared in the aforementioned Avengers, as well as playing Senator Roark in both Sin City movies, voicing Gorilla Grodd in Justice League Unlimited, and providing Lex Luthor’s voice in the animated movie Superman: Brainiac Attacks.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesday nights on ABC. It has not been announced in which episode Boothe will debut.
